To usher in 2021 we wanted to do something fun as a family, something we haven’t experienced before. Since the Lodge has floor to ceiling windows that look directly at Mt. Washington and the tracks that ascend the 6,288’ peak, we decided to take a ride on the World’s first cog railway built back in 1869 – the oldest operating tourist railway in the world.
While people from around the World know about this awesome trip to the top of Mount Washington to visit the observatory all summer and fall, many don’t know they can enjoy a ride on The Cog in the winter. After purchasing tickets online, guests will be asked to arrive about 15 minutes before boarding time (it’s about a 20 minute ride from the Lodge so if you don’t want to miss breakfast, I’d plan a trip after 10:30). The Cog is following COVID procedures and every other row of seats is left empty to space riders out. Masks are required to be worn on the train.
Their new trip ascends to the Waumbek Station which is located in an alpine meadow just below 4000’. When you disembark the train on a clear day, you’ll be met with stunning views reaching all the way into Vermont. There are warming huts and fire pits to hang out by while enjoying complimentary hot refreshments during the 25 minute stay. Even on a cloudy winter day, our guests said it was a great trip and they’d recommend it to anyone. And if you’re lucky to get Andy as your tour guide, you’ll get a great overview of the history of The Cog!
We would love to host you for a fantastic winter getaway. Whether an outdoor enthusiast or one who loves to relax with a book by the fire, you’ll have an amazing vacation at our lodge. Book online today or contact us anytime for further information.
